Last month, we were having ourselves a good chuckle over an awfully inspired commercial for the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta. And now that we've caught a glimpse of what our favorite automaker has in store for the Super Bowl, we are just counting down the days until February 2 here at Walker Mazda/Volkswagen.

From what we've gathered, Volkswagen has created the Ultimate Game Day Commercial featuring Carmen Electra, Abraham Lincoln and unicorns (among others) as they get down to Wang Chung around a new VW model. But, as you'll see in the teaser video below, it looks like they still have some kinks to work out.

Volkswagen Celebrates 10 years of the SUV with the Touareg X

When the Volkswagen Touareg burst on to the scene here at Walker Mazda/Volkswagen, it certainly caught the eye of many people. After all, it had everything we've come to love out of VW models, and that added bit of utility and ruggedness that helps us through these Vermont winters. Hard to believe that the first models arrived in our showroom 10 years ago, but in celebration of it, the automaker is releasing a limited-run anniversary edition packed with many features.

Called the Touareg X, there will only be 1,000 units available. It will come with a TDI clean diesel engine, while also featuring navigation, a panoramic sunroof, power and heated seats, and LED running lights. There's specialized 19-inch "Moab" wheels, plus various black accents throughout the cabin, featuring Vienna black leather, and piano black trim. Also, there's Touareg X badging throughout.

Best October Sales Figures in Six Years for Mazda Brand Attributed to CX-5 and Mazda6

The numbers are in for October, which proved to be full of more treats than tricks for the Mazda brand with the sales of 19,738 models in the U.S. Not only does this reflect a six percent increase over last year, it also marks the best October sales for the Japanese automaker since 2007.

With this sales accomplishment, the year-to-date total of Mazda models sold in the U.S has been boosted up to 240,229 units sold in 2013, which is up 5.3 percent over the previous year.

Wondering which models contributed the most to the brand's sales last month? This honor belongs to the Mazda CX-5 which tallied 5,833 sales for a gain of 54.4 percent while the Mazda6 posting a staggering increase of 104.6 year-over-year thanks to the sales of 3,100 units. Another accomplishment for the Mazda6 is that these sale numbers made last month the best October for the vehicle in five years.

Also posting big gains in the rest of the Mazda lineup were the models equipped with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY�. Vehicles that offer matchless fuel efficiency alongside remarkable driving dynamics thanks to this unique engine offering accounted for 77.6 percent of the brand's sales in October. Prepare yourself to hear a Beetle roar, because spy shots just revealed to us a look at a near-production ready model of the new Beetle R.

Tearing up the pavement in Germany, the flagship Volkswagen model looked sharp with a R-Line bodykit. This sporty uniform applies new front and rear fascia, side skirts, dual exhausts and spoiler to the Beetle, and of course was complete with the classic five-spoke R wheels.

With a matte gray paintjob and blacked out features, the only thing breaking the bold dark Beetle's looks were the bright red brake calipers. The look is just downright amazing, and adding the 2.0-liter engine under the hood, which may put out horsepower nearing 300, this Beetle is one lean mean speed machine.

Rumors have stated that the Beetle R will get even sportier as it nears its release, and considering it already looks fantastic we can't wait to see how much better they really can make it. Sportier sheetmetal and a different spoiler could adorn the final product, and we expect to see the debut somewhere around either the Geneva or Paris Motor Shows, so keep in the loop here on our blog as we learn more.

Volkswagen Will Produce EVs by 2015

By next year Volkswagen is hoping to produce at least 14 new Volkswagen electric variants. The first one set for America will be the e-Golf, taking the already popular and versatile hatchback and giving it an electric motor and zero-emission platform. Depending on sales of the e-Golf, VW will roll out more electric cars to the states. The automaker predicts that it will be able to offer up to 40 electric or hybrid vehicles when all is said and done.

Pricing for the All-New Mazda CX-9 Model Announced

At Walker Mazda/Volkswagen, we're thrilled to welcome the 2014 Mazda CX-9 to the Mazda line-up, soon to be on our Barre & Montpelier showroom floors. We're anxiously awaiting the new model, which recently received its official pricing from the brand. The base-level Mazda CX-9 will start at $30,780, including shipping fees.

Even in the base model, you will see an array of features including a 5.8-inch display screen, 18-inch alloy wheels and automatic climate control. Then there's the mid-level Touring which adds leather-trimmed heated seats, a backup camera. The top level trim, called " Grand Touring," has a starting price of $35,830 and comes with a variety of features that will make your driving experience more pleasant, such as additional armrests and an anti-theft alarm.

Volkswagen Updating TDI Engine for Future Models

Here on the Walker Mazda/Volkswagen blog, we're always touting the merits of our TDI Clean Diesel lineup, and the added benefits they provide drivers. VW is always investigating more ways to bring more power in to these engines while maintaining or improving their efficiency.

For the 2015 model year, the 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine found on the likes of the Jetta, Passat, and Golf will increase the horsepower to 150, while still having the same 236 pound-feet of torque.

Numbers aside, you will quite literally feel more power when you get behind the wheel. There's also the added benefit of having an improved throttle response, and lower emissions. That's thanks to the exhaust gas recirculation system, and by integrating the water-cooled intercooler, along with the EGR valve with the intake manifold. Sounds complicated but trust us when we say it makes it a better new Volkswagen machine.

As for fuel economy, take the Jetta TDI. It attains 30 miles per gallon in the city, and 42 on the highway with both manual and automatic transmission.

Mazda Makes a Splash with Best July Sales in Six Years

At Walker Mazda Volkswagen, our Mazda models have been 'zoom zoom'-ing off our lot and we're not the only ones that have experienced great Mazda sales this summer. Many drivers, including those around the Barre & Montpelier VT area, are flocking to dealerships this season to get their hands on a new Mazda, and the numbers show it.

Last month alone, the auto brand sold 24,977 units which not only marks a 29.4 percent increase from a year ago, but also the best July Mazda has had since 2007.

So what were the big players? Here are some of the best-selling models in July:

The Mazda2 sold 800 units.
The Mazda3 enjoyed a 2.3 percent increase in year-over-year, with a total of 9,236 sold.
The Mazda5 wrapped up July by selling 922 vehicles.
The all-new 2014 Mazda6 also had its best July since 2007, with 3,447 units sold making for an impressive 167.4 percent increase in year-over-year.
663 drivers chose to beat the heat in the summer-friendly Mazda MX-5 Miata, equaling a 12.4 percent growth.
The Mazda CX-5 reigns as a favorite, with 7,825 sold last month alone, showcasing a whopping 86 percent rise in sales when compared to July of last year.
The highest sales in two years, the Mazda CX-9 sold 2,084 units, marking a 6.2 percent surge in year-over-year sales.

Redesigned 2014 Mazda3 Coming Soon

Perhaps you recently caught a glimpse of the redesigned 2014 Mazda3 and might be wondering when Walker Mazda/Volkswagen expects to see it arrive in its showroom. Today's blog post is about shedding some light on this newly redesigned vehicle.

The Mazda3 comes with a choice of two new engines under the hood for the 2014 model year. The first is a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter, which will likely be the standard engine of the lineup. It boasts 155 horsepower and 155 lb.-ft. of torque. Meanwhile, those in the market for something with a little more oomph will be happy to see that Mazda also plants to offer a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine as well. This option delivers 184 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque.

We also heard rumors of a diesel option offered for the European model. However, there has been no confirmation of this variant for the U.S. market.

There is plenty of new technology inside the Mazda3, with a new infotainment system that has the ability to read text messages, emails and social media feeds while the vehicle is in motion by using text-to-voice technology. The system allows the driver to stay safe while staying connected to the world outside.

Volkswagen Mulls Leasing XL1 Plug-In

Back when the Volkswagen XL1 arrived on the scene, we got a special feeling. The one where we'd do anything to get one in our Barre, VT showroom. But, at the time of its release, VW said the innovative plug-in diesel hybrid would not be coming to the United States. That was then. Now, they are saying there is a chance, and like Lloyd Christmas, we're getting excited about that potential opportunity.

Mazda Shows Off Auto 'Game Changers' with New Ad Campaign

Mazda doesn't have the reputation for being a "game changer" in the industry. Unlike companies like Toyota, the car manufacturer hasn't had much innovation since the introduction of its iconic rotary engines decades ago. However, the critics may be surprised when the brand's latest advertising campaign, named "Game Changer," is launched.

Obviously, Mazda is trying to position itself as a game changer with this campaign. The new TV ads will show prominent American personalities that are game changers in different industries, ranging from sports to science. The new 2014 Mazda6 will be featured in these commercials as the headliner. Mazda has a plan over the next two years to improve the quality of its vehicles and introduce new products to the marketplace. Volkswagen of America Donates $10 Million to National Mall Overhaul

Our nation's capital holds some of the country's greatest treasures and moments- many of which are located in the National Mall. But, have you seen the state of these grounds lately?

Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning, who is British, states he was shocked to see such poor conditions surrounding the Jefferson Memorial, which has regular flooding around its Tidal Basin. He states, "When you think [the National Mall is] the [site] of the transfer of power between presidents, when you think of the right to free speech and to demonstrate, but also the right to kind of socialize and enjoy yourself, the mall, to me, is an incredible microcosm of what U.S. life represents. He adds, "You get up close and you see the see the wrinkles and the cracks and you think, this needs some tender loving care."¹ Volkswagen recently donated $10 Million to the project.

The Trust for the National Mall is hoping to raise $350 million to preserve and restore the historic site. This year, the goal is $38 million, a bit higher than last year's fundraising efforts of $22 million. In June, the Trust will announce which specific restoration project it will complete by 2016. Currently, organizers are comparing costs for two projects pitched by architects in a design competition last year.

One of these projects includes overhauling the grounds of the Washington Monument and adding a new amphitheater, caf�, and wooded canopy. Another includes overhauling the Constitution Gardens, which would be cleans up and given a cleaner water basin for boat and ice skating, as well as a new restaurant.

New Volkswagen App Allows You to Share Good Times on the Go

Walker Mazda/Volkswagen thinks that driving a new Volkswagen is an experience that will remain with you for a long time. That's why the German car manufacturer thought you might want to share your experience with some friends. Volkswagen came up with an original concept in the form of an app. The app allows you to log your journeys and share them with others.

Volkswagen named the app "Volkswagen Smileage" and will be available to download through the Google Android market soon. You might wonder how it works. Think of it as social media for Volkswagen drivers. Upon starting your journey, the app, which is paired with your car, will recognize that you are driving. Other than storing your route, it will note things such as the weather, your destination and any stops you may along the way. You can then share this information with your friends to increase your "smileage" rating. Smileage is both the name of the app and the impact it will have on your driving experience!

The app can also be used to interact with other Volkswagen drivers using the Smileage app. The app uses fun features such 'punches' and 'stickers'. For example, when driving by another Volkswagen vehicle, you earn a 'punch' and crossing paths with a similar model will earn you a special sticker. All these features are posted to your profile and can be viewed by other Volkswagen drivers.

Lately, Walker Mazda/Volkswagen has been raving about the 2013 Mazda CX-5, but we know that it's not the only SUV in the Mazda lineup worth raving about. We are also huge fans of the 2013 Mazda CX-9 and want to share more facts about this incredible SUV in today's blog post.

First and foremost, let's talk safety. The new Mazda CX-9 comes with remarkable safety ratings and features. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests, the CX-9 earned the top score of "Good" in frontal and side-impact tests, and it's equipped with full length side curtain airbags. There's also a rearview camera with rear parking sensors and a blind spot warning system (standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims).

The Mazda CX-9 has an unbelievable amount of standard tech features, with an upgraded version of Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and a 5.8-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Futuristic, Fuel-Sipping Volkswagen XL1 Will Make It to Market

In one of the most exciting (and surprising!) announcements in the brand's recent history, automaker Volkswagen has announced it will send its amazing fuel-efficient and futuristically-designed Volkswagen XL1 vehicle to market.

So, exactly how fuel-efficient will the new vehicle be? Try 261 miles per gallon by European standards (which is slightly higher than U.S. estimates, but still amazingly impressive). The automaker boasts, "The 261-mpg fuel consumption figure is a record that has not been achieved by any other vehicle to date, showing that Volkswagen is redefining what is technically feasible in the automotive industry."¹

Though the XL1 was shown before as a concept, we never really expected it to go into production, though it's still yet to be determined whether or not it will make its way to the U.S. We should learn more when the vehicle makes its (likely) debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

The two-seat plug-in hybrid vehicle can travel 32 miles solely on electricity before harnessing the power of its diesel engine. Even with this engine, the car is incredibly efficient, needing only 8.3 horsepower to travel at 62 miles-per-hour. The engine itself only has two cylinders and creates only 47-hp, with the electric motor adding another 27-hp.
